SSL (or Secure Socker Layer) certificates are small data files that bind a cryptographic key to an organisations details. In plain English, an SSL certificate provides a safer, encrypted connection between your website and its visitors.
SSL has long been a requirement for PCI Compliance (taking payments online) but recent changes to search engines and web browsers have put further importance on having an SSL certificate on your website. So why is it now more important than ever to have an SSL certificate on your website?
Browsers now highlighting non-SSL sites
Web browsers such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are now starting to highlight when a site is not secured by an SSL certificate. Back in September last year, Google wrote a blog post about their planned changes.
At the moment in Chrome and Firefox only webpages that contain a login form will show a security warning – Firefox even goes so far to display an overlay at the bottom of the input field. However both browsers plan to roll this out to any non-secure page in the future, so it’s really worth investing now to get an SSL certificate installed before this happens.
Showing your website visitors that you have taken steps to protect them and their data on your site by installing an SSL certificate provides a level of trust that is so important when using the web.
Search Engine Optimisation
For some time now, search engines are taking whether a website has an SSL certificate into account within their ranking algorithms – meaning that if your site has a certificate it has the potential to outrank a site without one, of course there are many other ranking factors to take into account as well but it could be an easy win for many site owners.
