A little while ago Facebook rolled out a new update which allowed a video to be used as a cover image, in today’s blog we’re looking at how we created a short video to be used on our Facebook business page and how we discovered a few best practices along the way.
You can see our video in situ here or just watch it here..
Check out the specs
Facebook provide guidelines on how your video should be sized and how long it should be – currently they suggest a minimum size of 820 x 312 pixels but for best results to use a size of 820 x 456 pixels. The length of the video should be between 20 and 90 seconds – so quite a lot of scope to show off everything you’d like to in your cover video.
Have a think about what you want to include
When creating any video it’s always a good idea to set out the kind of shots you’d like to include – you might even think about creating a storyboard to map out the progression of your video.
Shoot your footage
You don’t need any special equipment to shoot a decent video, a smartphone and a basic editing package will do – we shot the footage for ours on an iPhone 7.
Once all your footage is captured, import it into your video editing programme. We used Adobe Premier as we have access to it but there’s nothing in our video that couldn’t be achieved using iMovie or Shotcut (which is a free video editing app for Windows) Just remember to set your video size to the recommended dimensions of 820 x 456 pixels.
Audio & Effects
You can choose to include audio or not but just remember that the video will play on Facebook without audio initially, so it really needs to work without in any case. We chose to give our video a little blur just to give it that ‘soft focus’ effect and boosted the colours in some of the clips to give it a little more vibrancy.
Exporting & Uploading
Once you’ve edited your video, export it from your editor (.mp4 is a good format that Facebook will like) and head over to your Facebook page. Select ‘Change/Add a Cover’ in the top left of your cover photo and then select Upload Photo/Video – you’ll then be guided through the upload process, will be able to select if your video loops or not and also select one of ten still images captured from your video (by Facebook) to use as a thumbnail.
After the upload and options have been completed you’ll be asked to publish your video – once done don’t forget to share it with your followers to show it off and get a few likes!
Don’t be afraid to get stuck in to creating a video – it’s a great way to showcase a bit of your personality and it doesn’t have to be tricky to complete – we shot and edited ours in a morning and are already thinking about how else it can be used!
